Through six games, the Bucs offense does not resemble the powerhouse Tampa Bay attacks of the past three years.
There are many reasons and possible reasons, but a certainty is that there is one giant missing piece from the offense, and it’s not Ryan Jensen or Ali Marpet or Rob Gronkowski.
Joe’s referring to the architect of the offense, Bucco Bruce Arians. He’s the guy who now watches Bucs games with a cold drink and a pretzel — and a hat on his head without a headset draped over it.
Team Glazer is paying a brilliant offensive mind millions to be disengaged on gameday. Joe thinks that’s a crime against Bucs fans, and a weaksauce decision driven by egos and not good sense.
(Joe talked about this in August — in depth — on the Ira Kaufman Podcast, so this isn’t a fresh take.)
Joe believes Byron Leftwich calls the plays and has through his tenure as Bucs offensive coordinator. But Arians was an influencer, certainly on game days. For some reason, however, someone decided it was a good idea to pull the plug on Arians when the ball kicks off.
It’s almost ridiculous considering Arians’ knowledge of the personnel and the fact he attends practice.
What’s the harm in having him listen in and pick a spot or two each game to say, ‘Hey, Byron …?’ That’s exactly what Arians did previously.
Of course, Joe isn’t typing this after a Week 6 game if the Bucs offense hadn’t taken a giant step backwards this season. But reality says there’s been a significant decline in the passing game, running game, short-yardage game and red-zone game.
The men in charge should put a headset on Arians. They can always pull the plug after a week.
What do they have to lose? Whose feelings are they afraid to hurt?

I get your point Joe, but the Glaziers and Arians are not going to do anything to undermine the legitimacy and authority of their hand picked coaches. The league is tough. Either you win or not. We’ll see if Bowles and Leftwich deserve their current roles. They have been given the keys to a talented team. There will be no excuses.

To be fair to Byron, this team isn’t the same as years past. No Gronk, rookie offensive lineman, fewer Brady security blankets (like AB; Godwin is still healing).
The team’s coaching staff has to got to get it together fast. And the players have to stop thinking they can just show up and win. As Devin said, we get bored in the 4th quarter. That’s a losing mentality.

Well, Pete Carroll had never been a successful NFL head coach until the Seahawks hired him. And Bill Belichick had never been a successful head coach until the Patriots hired him.
The offensive game-planning issues aren’t on Todd Bowles, and overwhelmingly it’s been the offense that’s let us down the past few weeks. Sure, you can say that he’s the HC so the buck stops with him, but that doesn’t mean he’s the problem. It’s just that his head will be first in line for the chopping block whenever the pink slips start flying.
Those teams did not play the kind of team we did today. They do not have some of the BEST receivers in football and the GOAT.
Don’t worry boys. It will be better next week. We’ll just #RUNFORNONE. That should fix it.

It told all the players and where they were from and the number and the stats. Now here we are 3 and 3 nd looking glum for the super bowl. i doubt we have any chance. Remember when he could not stand it anymore and took to the sidelines to fire up the squad? This ship is headed for the rocks with the current captain and navigator. I can not remember anything positive since the first game, first I thought it was early season slow start, even the wins have been iffy, except for the 2nd game and that only gave false hope. This is grave!
Bucs are so vanilla on offense! Boring to watch. No deep passes. Run, run, pass offense. Most of the passes are very short. No m deep shots. Playing scared.
All I know is Brady owned the Steelers, and now he can’t beat them with an underwhelming Pitt defense. He used to rip them up with bad OLs and mediocre receiver. Brady plays with us and now he sucks?! Same with the Saints. Brady had a winning record against them before he played for us. Maybe, just maybe the coaching makes a difference?!!
Williams Walls Pete carroll went 10-6 with the patriots one year so no. He also made the playoffs the following year with a 9-7 record with the pats. Carroll is a better head coach than Bowles. Stop.

What’s so infuriating is that all of Bucs Nation saw the travesty as it was happening. Stop running up the middle on first down. Throw to Evans. Don’t let them convert on 3rd and long. It didn’t seem to matter. Series after series, terrible play calling and terrible execution. It was on Bowles to turn it around. He didn’t! A few more games like that and his tenure will be short lived.
THe reason why Brady does not override BL’s plan, Maybe beacuse Brady does not want to disrespect Leftwich authority as an OC. Last year, I remember BL was calling a play and BRady said no and the media skewered Brady by saying “are you disrespecting your OC ?” So, maybe, in Brady’s mindset now is, I dont care what call you make.
I’m not disagreeing with you about who the better coach is. I’m just saying that I see a lot to blame Leftwich for, but not so much to blame Bowles for. Bowles didn’t hire BL. The defense’s play hasn’t been worthy of getting any coaches fired.
My point was that there have been a fair number of coaches who were handed smelly brown sandwiches in their first stint at the HC position that turned out great when they got another shot with a better situation (and usually it’s a front office problem, which we don’t have here).

Something I said the beginning of the year and I will keep saying it—- this is not a run first team. They need to be a pass first to open up the run which then opens up play action.
Who to blame about the offense… BL, Brady, running backs, receivers, O-line Everyone needs to stop trying to blame one person. It’s all of them. The receivers seem to get horrible separation. The running backs can’t find a hole. Whenever the O line really needs a yard or to pass protect in a crucial situation they fail. Brady is looking to get rid of the ball within a yard of the line of scrimmage one out of every three pass attempts. It’s pathetic , that’s not all playcalling, some of that is Brady.
Then of course there’s this vaunted defense that gives up a 3rd and 16 when the O needs the ball back to kick a field goal to win!?!?
… Everything is won and lost in the trenches and so far this year they are losing on both sides of the ball

I think it’s time to rebuild for the future. First let Brady walk and trade Godwin, Smith, and Lenny.. White, Vita, Shaq, Carlton Davis, LVD (if he’s wanted, but will eat a lot of money ) Keep ME13 if possible and have him and Gage for the next QB and see what it would take for the Saints to come off of Payton. I can’t go through another 10 years of crap and I think it can be done in a 3 year rebuild and let Sean also become the GM. ( Bye Licht ) I think and thank Brady for the 2 years, but he needs to move on and hope he can fix his marital issues and family situation. Would anyone be SHOCKED if the Bucs don’t win next week? Or the week after that? Clearly the offense is NOT getting better. Licht & Arians have too much loyalty to demote or remove Bowles & Leftwich. This year may be lost. The D is NOT the same without the toughness and leadership of Suh and JPP. Wouldn’t be surprised if Brady does not finish this year. Next year the whole team should be blown up. New GM, New Coach, and New players who are driven to be the best in a tough sport and hungry to compete for more than one SB. We had to wait 18 years between Super Bowls. If the Bucs make the right moves now (that is, clean house and get value for whatever talent they have) maybe we won’t have to wait so long for the next one.

I didn’t say Bowles is doing a good job, and I definitely didn’t say that the defense is playing well. I’m just saying that it’s not bad enough to justify firing Bowles–at least not yet. For heaven’s sake, we gave Mike Smith what, three years? At least two before we finally canned him for impersonating a DC. And how many years did we let Lovie impersonate a football coach of any stripe? And y’all want to can Bowles after six games? That’s just unconscionable.
But we’ve seen this from BL before. Whenever he gets too far from Arians’ apron strings, this is what he turns into. It’s time for him to go. Right now. Before we have another Mike Smith situation on our hands. Christensen would do a much better job as OC. He can do a good job when he has good pieces, and we have good pieces on offense here. At least we can be certain that he’d rather win the game than run the ball.
BA isn’t going to upstage these guys. BL and Bowles will sink or swim. This team is nowhere near as talented as the last two. Blame injuries, coaching, schedule, whatever. You can’t replace Gronk and AB with Gage and Rudolph+ a couple rookies. Godwin is giving his all, but he’s not close to 100%. The offense is designed to get the ball down field. It looks like square peg, round hole.
Byron Leftwich has the most predictable game plan I have ever seen. We sit at home on our couch and predict the play call before it happens, there is absolutely no creativity in play calling. What team would want to hire this guy as a head coach?

I really didn’t want to move on from a known good situation to a mystery as to whether Bowles was ready or not, or was even truly capable or not. Problems start with Leftwich insistence to run to the weaker left side and not getting the ball into the playmakers hands. I would like to see some of the weaker offensive parts benched. Left guard and punt returner should be sat down. Gage isn’t getting the job done. Put in one of the speedsters from practice squad and let them get behind the secondary.

Unless Bowles and BL can play on the O line and D line, this will not change anytime soon. I like BA, and wish he was still the Head Coach. But there is a massive diference in what the Bucs are trotting out on the field now as compared to the last few seasons. The Bucs have had arguably the Best O line the last 2 years and D line has been top 1- 5 also. The Bucs are not even close to what they were on the line of scrimmage with BA as the Head Coach. This will continue until the Bucs man up and starting winning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

The same grown men crying now were giddy talking about how Brady got rid of Coach Arians. I immediately ignore posters who don’t the fundamental difference between practice and a brief walk through. Brady was a full participant in practice all week. He didn’t take his Wednesday vet day. He missed a brief walkthrough on Saturday morning.
Has anyone been paying attention to GB. They’re imploding right now. Rodgers calling out his coach and GM. At least we haven’t reached that point. By the way, GB’s coach made a change at OL when they’re weren’t getting the job done. Take note Bowles.

We played the entire game and NEVER Scored a Touchdown!!! Bradys’ Record against the Steelers was 12 wins & 3 losses Now he can add another Loss to his resume. We Need Receivers….Brady has No one to throw to- Mike Evans is getting double teamed and pretty much taken out of the games. So, Brady is playing it safe by handing the ball off to Fournet- but that’s not fooling anyone anymore….it’s obvious! NEED A NEW COACH….NEED RECEIVERS!!!!
I lived through Marino’s painfully last season. He’s one of my favorite players of all time. I know washed when I see it, and Brady’s not washed. Marino was also a hothead like Brady. My dirty secret is that Rodgers is my favorite QB next to Montana, so I follow the Packers quite a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I still love Brady. Rodgers has aged just like Brady and they need a strong supporting cast, especially at OL. They’re both making poor throws and dirting the ball before they get hit.
Truth be told, Brady at 45 has looked better than Rodgers. Rodgers is also taken some heat because he’s gone rogue. He’s been changing his coaches plays at the line. You people want Brady to do this, but this will cause a lot of tension. Remember when Brady called off Leftwich at the end of the Dallas game last year? The camera panned to Leftwich and he was pissed. He even had a convo with Brady after the play.
The painful truth is Brady can’t carry a team with a Bad OL anymore. The truth is it’s difficult for any QB. Mahomes looked like a JAG when he played behind a line, and Mahomes is mobile.

It was never a brilliant move to make Bowles the Bland HC or to have BL as OC in the first place, but it is desperation to want BA back in any capacity. The unfortunate correct answer is none of the above, but this is it for the season, no recourse.
They were outcoached today by Mike Tomlin Inc., which is not even a great coaching staff. Tomlin at least knows how to motivate, and that was the difference today. Scrub Steelers played with more fire.
BucsFan13, yes, Brady needs an OL. He used to have one. If and when Jensen gets back, it will help, but losing three guys without equal or better replacements is likely going to decide the season. Which should have been an all-in, a star roster with all pieces in place before week 1. But no.
Noodle-armed immobile Peyton Manning literally limped through his last season with the Broncos. He got a SB. He didn’t have to work very hard, because the team was good enough and coached well enough. That is what TB12 should have now. But no.
@ Howard Cosell: I am not sure they do not respect him but I do believe that they do not fear him! With BA you know that players were always in the doghouse for below average play, not so with Bowles.
@ Jack Sparrow: You may be onto something with TB12 not overiding Leftwich’s lame playcalling during this loss. The Glazers should let him know that it should be expected of him to just audible out of the mundane and vanilla first down runs that yield 2 yards and a pile of dust. **** feelings of an OC who never adjusts his game plan to attack an obvious weakness! Heck he should have started doing that in the 2nd quarter and even if they were to run, why did they choose to run behind the weak side instead of going behind Mason and Wirfs. It was almost like the entire game plan was scripted, not just the first 10 or 12 plays.
Man I hope one of the Joes gets to ask Leftwich about why his first down calls or so predictable, ala 2019, I wonder if Joe will get more than a glare and a “No!” this time around!
Never underestimate the power of a pen. Especially a red one. Seriously though the Offense looks awful. After 6 games is like watching they are in 2nd week of training camp. No rhythm, no flow, no chemistry. Its beyond alarming at this point.
Nice thinking Joe but isn’t going to happen. There is no way that the Glazers admit this early that they may have made a mistake by cutting Arians out. I get the whole I just wanted to set my guy up for success story that came out when Arians graciously steps aside to let Bowles be head Coach. It never set right with me or a lot of people but maybe some day the truth will come out.
Without that extra few seconds needed by the o-line “the risk it, no biscuit” offense has been neutered.
I believe the coaches need to rethink themselves. What they did Pryor isn’t what they can do now. Make some adjustments and put people on the field who have a hunger. We have some good young talent. Also I’m still wondering why Miller is still here. He can’t get off the line and he can’t win the battle so why did we keep him again. And could some please tell me how we keep getting called for 12 men on the field. Wait I know because the sideline is not focused enough and their heads not in the game. Vet ran off the field diagonally instead off across and didn’t make it. Player substitution is now becoming the 12th man for the opposing offense. All teams now are using it against us. Focus please. One last thing it’s obvious to me Bradys head is not on football with Tampa Bay he doesn’t seem to be able to focus. I’m a fan but time to go Tom. I would rather have Trask who wants to be here then what’s going on with Brady. I’m not saying the season is lost but wow. Could you Brady stop screaming at everyone all the time.

There is a laundry list of items that have led to this dismal start to the season, and yesterdays game they broke out to the surface like a Great White Shark elevating for a Seal from 50 meters below the surface. TODD BOWLES you have to be the most uninspiring person to listen to during your post game interviews, and even your bland post game locker room speeches to the team. The team is mimicking and playing like your monotone demeanor. Either get angry, or hand the headset to someone who will. Byron Leftwhich, all that talent at your disposal yet your offense has turned into check down passes to Leonard Forunette. Defense playing hard, but just like Todd Bowles Cover zero in the NFC Divisional against the Rams to give them the go ahead 60 yard pass to Coopert Cupp, what on earth kind of scheme are you running on back 2 back 3rd and longs at the end of the game to allow them to convert. ACCOUNTABILITY, we have none. It’s time to hear form the GM. The fans deserve more, or don’t but dont sell us on higher concession and ticket prices if you’re going to roll over and die like a Opossum in the street.
